Los Angeles City University (LACU) is excited to announce the launch of its Center for Ethics in Technology and Society, a pioneering initiative focused on exploring the ethical implications of modern technologies. As advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and big data increasingly shape our society, the center will examine the ethical dilemmas that accompany these innovations.
The center aims to unite scholars from various disciplines—including computer science, ethics, law, and sociology—to investigate the ethical challenges posed by technology. Through collaborative research, public engagement, and community outreach, LACU seeks to be at the forefront of discussions surrounding responsible technology use.
As technology continues to evolve, crucial questions arise regarding privacy, fairness, and the impact of automation on jobs and society. The Center for Ethics in Technology and Society will tackle these pressing issues, ensuring that technological advancements are guided by ethical considerations.
“We are committed to fostering a culture of ethical responsibility in technology,” said Dr. Jessica Green, Director of the center. “Our goal is to ensure that as we embrace innovation, we do so with a keen awareness of our ethical obligations.”
• Interdisciplinary Research: The center will support collaborative research initiatives that address ethical issues, such as algorithmic bias, data privacy, and the societal effects of automation. Scholars from diverse backgrounds will come together to find solutions that benefit society as a whole.
• Curriculum Development: LACU will integrate ethics and technology into its academic programs, providing students with essential skills to navigate the ethical landscape of modern innovations.
• Public Engagement: The center will organize public events, including lectures, workshops, and community discussions to engage citizens in dialogue about technology ethics and its implications for society.
• Industry Partnerships: LACU plans to collaborate with technology companies to implement ethical practices in real-world scenarios, ensuring that innovation aligns with societal values.
The Center for Ethics in Technology and Society will play a vital role in preparing LACU students to become ethical leaders in the tech industry. Through hands-on research, internships, and collaborative projects, students will gain invaluable experience in addressing ethical dilemmas.
“Our students will emerge as responsible innovators who understand the ethical ramifications of their work,” said Dr. Green. “We are dedicated to equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions.”
LACU envisions the Center for Ethics in Technology and Society as a global hub for technology ethics research and dialogue. The center will collaborate with international universities, research institutions, and policymakers to establish best practices and guidelines for responsible technological innovation.
The center is committed to ensuring that technology benefits all communities, particularly those that may be marginalized by technological advancements.
The grand opening of the center is scheduled for January 15, 2025, featuring keynote addresses from leading experts in technology and ethics, along with panel discussions covering critical topics such as AI governance, data privacy, and the future of work.
As the center develops, LACU plans to expand its research initiatives, strengthen community engagement, and lead discussions on ethical technology development.
